FAQ > The Contest > What is travel writing?
Travel writing is a genre that is both fluid and inclusive. Many things, including parts of the Bible, are considered travel writing. It is even possible to consider Homer's Oddysey travel writing, even though it is more commonly thought of as an epic. Some of the more famous contemporary examples include Jack Kerouac's On the Road and any of Bill Bryson's works.
Essentially, travel writing is about a journey in a place that is not considered "home", more often personal than not. It can be a story, an essay, a poem, a photo essay, etc. It is about the dramatics of the trip to a champagne brunch in Paris or a roadtrip to Grandma's house in the neighboring town. Because home is such a complex and adaptable location these days, travel writing is equally expansive or inconclusive - really, it's up to you.
