Summer Art and Story Contests!

In addition to accepting regular submissions for the magazine, Sliced Bread will be running special contests for short stories and art. Winners of both contests will receive a $25 gift card to the Seminary Co-Op Bookstore. In addition to a gift card, the winner of the Summer Art Contest will have her art featured on Sliced Bread's 2017 t-shirts, which will be available for purchase by Winter Quarter 2018.

If submitting an art piece to the Summer Art Contest, address the title of your email as such: "Last Name, Art Contest, Name of Piece." If an email is not titled as such, we will not review the piece attached for either contest, even if it is an art piece or short story. Even if a piece is not chosen as a winner for either contest, it will still be reviewed for the magazine. Submissions to both contests can be sent to

We request that story stories be no more than eight pages double-spaced in Times New Roman font, with 1 inch margins. You may submit up to two pieces for the short story contest, and up to two pieces for the Summer Art Contest. We encourage all writers and artists to send any additional work as regular submissions to the magazine.

The deadline for both contests is Sunday, October 15. We look forward to reviewing your work!

In collaboration with The Vein, Sliced Bread is proud to present brand new episodes of our podcast, The Bread Beat.  New episodes can be found on on our page here.  Our third episode features Lucia Lu reading her poem "Tom Hanks," as well as Elizabeth Bynum reading her poem "Underneath."  In our fourth episode Julian Spergel reads Lillian Solenick's "The Byzantine Birds," a wonderfully creepy short story.

Hello from the BrEDitors!

We here at Sliced Bread have had a busy summer! Some of us have gone to/are in Turkey, China, and probably other places! Others of us are loving the summertime Chi, and the last of us are sitting in unairconditioned apartments, or working, or both... But now the leaves are starting to change and campus is looking a bit more busy. Classes start next week and the many RSOs that keep student life thriving at the U of C are also starting to get into gear. If you're looking to take part in an RSO that is challenging, rewarding, and quite a bit of fun, and are also interested in dipping your feet into the world of litmags, give us a chance!

We're taking applications to be on staff for the first two weeks of the quarter, and before you submit that app, you should definitely attend an info session.

To cut to the good stuff--

PLEASE NOTE that applications are only accepted during the first two weeks of Fall and Winter Quarter. If these dates are past and you still really want to be part of staff, please e-mail us first at
We recommend that you attend an information session before submitting an application. An information session will be held TUESDAY OF FIRST WEEK (OCTOBER 2) at 7:30PM in Harper 103 and THURSDAY OF FIRST WEEK (OCTOBER 4) at 7:30PM in Harper 130.

And email us ( if you have any questions!
